In 2003, the Winston Solar Car Team returned to race in the Australian World Solar Challenge. The team got held back by damage to several major electrical system components during shipping in 1996, and by a faulty lithium ion battery system, fried telemetry system, and a solar array fire in 1999.

This time the result would be different. This time the Winston Solar Car Team would finish the entire 1800 mile race across the Australian Outback, and become the first high school solar car team to achieve that distinction.
