Solar Car Challenge Event Update 2024-1

Rule 5.4.2(d) - Main Battery Pack Fuse Location
The Rules for 2024 will not require the main battery pack fuse enclosure to be located within 15 cm of the main propulsion system battery box. The last sentence of this rule is eliminated.

Rule 5.4.5(a) - Disconnect Switches
This rule requires push-pull disconnect switches. The 2024 Race will allow teams to use "push-rotate" disconnect switches. It is still crucial that disconnect switches interrupt the flow of power by a pushing action

Rule 5.13(k) - Battery Spill Kits
These battery spill kits will only be required for teams using lead-acid batteries.

Rule 19.2.2.1 - Amber Lights on Vehicles
This rule requires chase vehicles to have an amber light on the roof. You will need to have one amber light at the front of each chase vehicle and four ECCO lights (facing to the rear) on each chase vehicle. [Applies to cross-country races]

Battery Capacity for Solar Cars

  • Classic - The total battery capacity cannot exceed 5.25 kilowatt-hours at a 20 hour discharge rate (for lead-acid) or at a 1C discharge rate (for LiFePO4).
  • Advanced Classic - The total battery capacity cannot exceed 5.25 kilowatthours at a 20 hour discharge rate (for lead-acid) or at a 1C discharge rate (for LiFePO4).
  • Advanced - The total battery capacity cannot exceed 5.25 kilowatt-hours at a 20 hour discharge rate (for lead-acid) or at a 1C discharge rate (for LiFePO4)
  • Electric-Solar Powered - The total battery capacity per pack cannot exceed 2.625 kilowatt-hours at a 20 hour discharge rate (for lead-acid) or at a 1C discharge rate (for LiFePO4)
  • Cruiser - The total battery capacity cannot exceed 10.5 kilowatt-hours at a 20 hour discharge rate (for lead-acid) or at a 1C discharge rate (for LiFePO4)

Race Start Time (Closed-Track Race)
In the event of extreme heat, the Race has the option to start the race at 8:00 AM and end the race at 4:00 PM. The required lunch break remains from 12:00 to 2:00 PM.

Heat Stress Protocol (Closed-Track Race)
In the event of extreme heat, the Race has the option to impose a Heat Stress Protocol.
